Information Regarding Fall Assessments

Early Literacy Legislation

The early literacy legislation, enacted by IA Code §279.68, requires all school districts in Iowa to administer a universal screening for all K-3 students. This screening is intended to identify students in need of additional literacy support. The screening is administered three times per year in September, January, and April. The Ankeny Community School District has a comprehensive literacy program that provides quality instruction, assessments and interventions for our students. This new requirement from the Department will add one additional data point to our existing program. Teachers will continue to work in the best interest of students, providing high quality instruction and interventions.

Iowa school districts must use one of the assessment tools approved by the Iowa Department of Education. Ankeny has selected the FAST assessments to meet these requirements. All students in kindergarten and 1st grade will take the earlyReading assessment in the fall, winter, and spring with 1st grade also taking the CMBReading in winter and spring. Students in 2nd, and 3rd grade will take the CBMReading assessment in the fall, winter, and spring. Parents will be notified if their child needs additional support according to the FAST assessment.

For more information on the Early Literacy Legislation, visit the Iowa Department of Education website.

NWEA MAP Testing

This year all students in grades 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th will take an assessment called Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP). The MAP assessments provide valuable information to help teachers design instruction to meet students’ learning needs and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year. MAP assessments are unique in that they are computer-adapted to be appropriate to varied student learning levels. Students will be assessed in the areas of reading, mathematics, and science in the fall, winter, and spring.

You can learn more about the MAP assessment here: http://www.nwea.org/map

The first assessment window is September 12-26. Please partner with us by making sure that your child has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast during the assessment period. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
